Note for:   Edward Woollen,   1624 -          Index
Individual note:   May have been indentured.
Came to Salem, Mass.
A shoremand and fisherman.
Married daughter of Hugh Pasco (?)
Frank David Woollen lists him as brother of Jean and John and
that he came to America with his kinsmen Willaim and Bridget
Wilkes on the Ship 'Griffin'. Belive this is correct but proof
not found.
Buys house of Edward Norris, minster and teacher at Salem,
Mass. Norris was the fourth pastor of First Congregational
Church: the celebrated Roger Williams was the first. Norris
also taught grammar School.
April 1660 was fined for striking James Thomas. In 1679 he took
and inventory of the Robert Starr estate.

12 April 1690 sells house on lowe corner of Essex and Turner
Streets to John Masters.

Mentioned 13 Nov 1662 at meeting of Selectmen of Salem and on
27 Nov 1662 George Gardner is 'to have the lott next to that
lott laid out for a tailor living at goodman Woollen's he
paying for it 5 pounds as others have done.' (Edward not a
tailor)
The Putnams and Hawthornes of Salem are frequently mentioned in
the Salem records on the same page with Edward Woollen. In
1662 he owned the house next door north of the 'House of Seven
Gables' immortalized in Nathaniel Hawthorne's romance.
Genealogical Dictionary of New England by James Savage, Vol IV
page 648: 'Edward Wooler is the name of a man found by Coffin
among the records of Essex of the Tempra Co. of Norfolk if Wh.
All that he tells that in 1658 he is 24 years old (b 1624).
Edward's occupation is listed as fisherman - shoreman, so from
the abpve he must have traveled. Records show he lived in Salem
at least from 1651 to 1690.
* OLD 171 MAy 1711 Wm. Robson left slaves to daus. Elizabeth
and Mary, to Jane Robson and John Woolland.
Salem court records & files show Edward Woollen II bought in
1660 a 2 acre lot from Samuel Archer, marshall for 71i, 10s &
was often mentioned until 1685. From these records he must
have traveled from Va. to Newfoundland. Twice he was mentioned
as an attorney for other people.
He, his son Edward III and Hugh Pasco were on a comitte that
wanted a new church, in 1650. This might be the one built
across the street from him. He was probably a
Congregationalist, but once he did not sign the oath of
allegiance, probably because of Quaker influence. Richard
Cranewer is mentioned in 1671.
History of Salem Mass pages 154 & 419 Vol 3 lists son Edward
Wollen III (listed as Jr.) Notes that Edward Wollen Jr & Sr.
boh took Oath of Fidelity 14 Mar 1672. Both signed petition to
allow Anthony Ashby to sell beer etc. 29 Nov 1670. Both
listed as paying taxes 16 Apr 1683.
